Stacy McKay Benander Wins Leo Downling Award of Excellence
Congratulations to our President and Founder, Stacy McKay Benander, for winning the esteemed Leo Dowling Award of Excellence!
Every year, NAFSA Region VI awards someone who has demonstrated the outstanding qualities that distinguished the late Leo R. Dowling of Indiana University, one of the “founding fathers” and an early president of NAFSA. The award recipient is selected for possessing the qualities of compassion, integrity, and leadership in the field of international education. This year, NAFSA selected Athena Study Abroad’s President and Founder, Stacy McKay Benander, as the recipient of this award.
NAFSA recognized Stacy’s strong leadership in the field, from her time at The Ohio State University, to Ohio Dominican University, to her founding of Athena Study Abroad. She was also recognized for her charitable side, as evidenced through her giving back to the field through her current role as a NAFSA Trainer Corps member, and her prior roles in NAFSA leadership. This is in addition to her work in ensuring Athena’s focus on charity through the creation of our S.O.S. program. S.O.S. has three important components: scholarship funds reserved for charity minded students, frequent Athena staff community service, and student-selected donations to various world charities.
We at Athena are very thankful to NAFSA Region VI for recognizing Stacy, and thankful to Stacy for serving as such a great leader to our organization!
