Founded in 2000 in Greece, HISA expanded its offerings to include Thailand in 2015.
Class sizes are minimized to ensure students receive individual attention, and benefit from a close working relationship with their instructors.

Yuko Yamauchi is a graduate of Hokkaido University Medical School in Sapporo, Japan, and a certified occupational therapist. For six years she worked for the Red Cross Hospital in northern Hokkaido. Having earned her degree in Psychology from the University of Indianapolis, she plays an important role in the program both as counselor and coordinator of student affairs. She also oversees the orientation and cultural excursion modules that are so integral to HISA's vision of social and creative immersion.
This intentionally small, on-the-go program is a true faculty-driven academic & experiential plunge into Thailand. You will be able to earn up to 6 credits during this time.

Due to the fast-pace of the program, experiential learning is integrated with the academic program. Field trips & excursions are designed to enhance the quality and application of the learning content. Some of these experiential learning components include:

While you are falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean, many of your friends will be home shoveling snow.
• You’ll stay in comfortable, tastefully furnished shared accommodations.
• Koh Samui: You will stay in a bungalow or apartment, usually close to the beach.
• Bangkok: You will stay in a modern, comfortable hostel.
This is an intensive 2 week program, so there will not be much time to travel independently. You will, however, be traveling with the program to different parts of Thailand during this time, so there isn’t much need for extra travel.
A typical program will have anywhere from 6-20 students. This makes for an incredibly personal and high-quality study abroad experience, things we at Athena pride ourselves on.
Delicious! An adventurous eater will be very happy as there are many opportunities to explore dishes that aren’t readily available in many American restaurants.
Vegetarians: Athena’s resident vegetarian gives Koh Samui Island an 8 out of 10 for being vegetarian friendly!

You will get a taste of two very different versions of Thailand. For the majority of your time, you will be on the island of Koh Samui. Here, you will experience the incredibly scenic island version of Thailand: laid back and easy-going. For the remaining time, you will get to experience Bangkok. This fast-paced, energetic city will speak to all of your senses. The pace of the city may seem a little chaotic at first, but it goes by a rhythm that makes it unique, and hypnotic to many.
CITY PERKS: Experience the magical landscape of the Gulf of Thailand surrounding Koh Samui … Witness Bangkok’s traditional downtown markets.
“Koh” translates to “island” in Thai, and Samui is derived from the word saboey meaning “safe haven”.
