Internships are available Fall, Spring and Summer terms. Below are potential internships available:


Architecture

 

Work with a local firm on a variety of tasks including computer work (Photoshop, AutoCAD, Indesign), project managing, onsite tasks, interior/furniture design, refurbishment tasks, creation of logos and any other related tasks for the projects in place at the time of the internship.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Business Administration, Communication, Marketing

 

Study the market and competitors and to propose action plans to increase business and target new audiences. Build online presence by improving social media sites and editing websites. Create multi-media projects to highlight and promote the business. Implement a marketing plan to strengthen old and creating new local partnerships. Assist with office work and customer service when needed to contribute to the smooth running of the business.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Civic Engagement

 

Proposing, organizing, and promoting student events to encourage integration within the local community. Facilitating Free English Conversation program between students and local Italians. Seeking volunteer opportunities in Sorrento, proposing new events and activities, and recruiting students for participation. Managing the Italian Language Week (free Italian lessons) promotion, including organizing student volunteers for flyer distribution, facilitating the organization of Italian professors available to teach the lessons, preparing material for lessons, and bringing in visitors to participate.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Creative Writing, English, Journalism


Writing and editing content for company websites, social media platforms, blogs, newletters, articles for the local magazine, and other projects depending on necessity and student interest. Taking photos to accompany writing material.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Culinary Arts


Assisting chefs in food preparation while maintaining a clean, safe, efficient work environment. Observing and assist staff in both the kitchen and dining room with any activities that they deem to be important toward the smooth running of the operation. Contributing to and uphold a pleasant atmosphere while interacting with customers and fellow staff to maintain a positive company image.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Education

 

Assisting teachers with lesson plans and materials for lessons. Researching new materials and proposing new activities and methods according to the student’s/class’s needs and objectives. Working with both individual and group classes for teaching English or Italian as a second language. Helping coordinate educational service projects, such as free conversation classes for low-income locals and projects with the local parish youth group.

Environmental Studies

 

Collaborating with organization leadership and volunteers for environmental protection. Informing guests about area rules, safety, and activities. Assisting with guided tours. Helping educate the public on environmental awareness and actively engaging in and promoting a healthy, legal environment. Monitoring the quality of the environment to maintain legal levels in protected areas.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Fitness Management

 

Preparing gym for special events and programs as well as maintaining a clean and safe environment. Attending to clients and introducing them to the facilities. Preparing a marketing plan to improve business visibility, maximize the quality of service, and increase number of clients. Proposing and organizing community events to promote the business and fitness awareness. Support staff with any necessary office tasks.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Hospitality & Tourism


Attending to clients inquiries and needs via front desk, email, and phone. Researching new markets and proposing actions to target new audiences. Maintaining social media accounts, editing website prose, creating survey and review forums, and collecting material for blogs and newsletters. Helping with the organization of weddings, events, and daily activities of the establishment.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Italian Studies


Assisting Italian teachers in lesson planning and teaching adult courses for individuals and groups.

***Students with an intermediate to advanced level of the Italian language are also applicable for internship positions listed in the other academic fields depending on their interests and experience. Additional positions in other academic fields (e.g. Translation, Real Estate, Finance, Psychology, Supply Chain Management, etc.) may also be available upon request for students with an advanced knowledge of Italian.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language highly recommended, but not required.


 

Law


Shadowing local lawyers on cases, including observing trials, possibly interviewing clients, and assisting with office tasks.

Language: Intermediate/Advanced Italian required.

Music and Music Technology


Working alongside local musicians and directors to practice for and participate in events. Assist logistics of practices and events, including planning, marketing, set up, take down, and follow ups.

Nutrition


Option 1:
Researching the Mediterranean diet. Observing client visits and assisting licensed nutritionist in preparing diets and suggestions for clients. Helping develop marketing plan to increase visibility and increase clientele as well as promote awareness of health and nutrition in general. Under the supervision of professional nutritionist, assisting with health code checks and collaborating with local pediatricians on dietary plans for schools.

Option 2:
Assisting in the process of the “kilometer zero” nutrition system: growing and producing food on the same site as it is prepared and served. Attending to the healthy growth and cultivation of plants and learning about the food preparation as well as production olive oil, limoncello, marmalades, etc. Promoting awareness of kilometre zero nutritional benefits.

Pharmaceutical Science


Working under the supervision of professionals to assist customers at the pharmacy. Helping with research and back office tasks deemed necessary for the business.

Language: English and Intermediate Italian highly recommended.

Social Work


Teaming up with local charity groups and volunteer organizations to work with disadvantaged people in the community, such as disabled youth and the eldery. Preparing projects and activities, such as pizza parties, arts and crafts, mini theatre productions, walks around town, gardening, etc. in order to entertain as well as socialize these groups with other locals and Sant’Anna student peers.

Veterinary Science


Assisting with medical procedures, such as ultrasounds, monitoring anesthesia, blood analyses. Preparing operating rooms and helping to manage patient therapy and recovery. Collaborating with local associations to participate in awareness events. Proposing and acting on improvements to help create a clear, clean image of the company’s public image.

Language: English, a knowledge of the Italian language recommended, but not required.

Visual Arts


Collaborating with local professionals on design projects ranging from handmade to digital art. Proposing and following through on designs in order to enhance the visual objectives of the company, including but not limited improving the office space environment as well as marketing materials.

Sorrento gives you many options to connect with the community through coursework. Here are a few examples of the most recent projects:

“Heritage Interpretation” with the Protected Marine Area of Punta Campanella

It’s about digging into the history and culture of the local environment and informing the public of its hidden values. This project focuses on zones that are a part of the Protected Marine Area of Punta Campanella and is done in tandem with professionals that research and monitor the area.

“Battle of the Bands” with various Sorrento locations

This competition among local high school musicians is organized and promoted by students with the goal of raising money for a study abroad scholarship to be awarded to local high school student programs. Students seek local business sponsors, design the advertising and other event details to put on an enjoyable night for everyone. The organization is coordinated with representatives of the local high schools. The winning band wins a prize from the sponsors, and those who donated toward the cause by voting are eligible for donated raffle prizes as well.

“English Teaching” with local public schools K-12

Accompanied by ESL teachers, students assist in lessons to teach local students about the English language. Lessons will be prompted by the ESL teacher in accordance to the curriculum, and student volunteers may propose, prepare, and present activities to support the lessons while sharing their culture with these local kids.

“Meta Wayfinding” Project

Meta is a small town close to Sorrento, the students wanted to do something to improve the tourist experience. In order to that, there was a need for a clear graphic description or “wayfinding” path that would lead visitors to all of the interesting sites in town and culminate at the waterfront. The project includes more than just a signage system but also elements such as sculptures, murals, benches for stopping and historical markers along the way.

“A Students Secrets of Sorrento” with the Surrentum, a local magazine

The study abroad experience in Sorrento offers a deeper perspective of the town for students that have the opportunity to discover the treasures this community and area have to offer beyond the usual tourist experiences. The Surrentum offers column space to Sant’Anna students to share these insights with the Surrentum audience: both local community members, visiting tourists, and other students.
