Fall 2017 Athena Scholarship Winners

And the winners are...

Another semester, another round of great Athena scholarship applicants! Thanks to everyone who submitted an application and dedicated your time to serving in your local communities. We are constantly inspired by our students and how they selflessly give back to their communities to make this world a better place.

We are excited to announce the following winners for the Athena 2017 Fall Scholarships:

Marie McKay Global Citizen Scholarship: $1,000

Kasey Tasch

Florida Gulf Coast University

Florence, Italy

We are very excited to present this years Marie McKay Global Citizen scholarship to Kasey Tasch who is studying abroad this Fall semester at our Florence, Italy location.

The Marie McKay Global Citizen Scholarship is designed for the Athena student who can best demonstrate an interest in and intention to promote the concept of social justice at a city, state, national, and/or global level. Because students that study abroad become many of our world’s future leaders, it is extremely important that these students consider ways to become globally competent citizens. The recipient of this award must demonstrate an initiative to give back to society, and awareness of global community, and intent to apply the skills and lessons learned abroad to his/her future endeavors.

Kasey’s love for giving back was inspired by her grandparents’ move into a nursing home, where she discovered first hand the simple needs in life that often fall to the way side during old age: respect, companionship, and community support. She continued her volunteer service which she started at her grandparents’ nursing home when she left for college. There Kasey became involved in a program called “Opening Minds Through Art” at a local nursing home, where she would guide a resident through a different art project each week. She is looking forward to opening her own mind now through her study abroad experience, and she hopes to use her new skills to give back even more effectively upon her return to the U.S.

Vincent I. Benander Learning Scholarship: $1,000

Anapurl Feldman

Emerson College

Paros Island, Greece

This years Vincent I. Benander Learning scholarship goes to Anapurl Feldman who is studying abroad this Fall semester at our Paros Island, Greece location.

The Benander Academic Scholarship is designed for the Athena student who can best demonstrate a true “love of learning” in his/her major area of study, and superior academic abilities. The recipient of this scholarship can be from any academic discipline, but must be able to show a strong, demonstrated passion and success in his/her field of interest.

Anapurl shared her passion for writing, growing beyond her love for creative writing, and the challenge of reflecting her thoughts in a meaningful and expressive way. In her own words “Writing is a bridge to connect words, a lens with which to see life through another’s eyes. Without it, the world would seem very homogenized and small”. Her hope is that that her writing will open up conversations between groups, and encourage those that would otherwise remain silent to have a voice.

Athena Penny Scholarship: $250

Alexius Schleif

Central Washington University

Dublin, Ireland

We are excited to award this Falls Penny Scholarship to Alexius Schleif who is currently abroad on our Dublin, Ireland program.

The Penny scholarship is given to the student who best demonstrates what he or she expects to gain from they studying abroad program.

Lexi described the emotions of her earlier (very short) visit to Ireland, during which she was taken aback by a “wave of pure happiness” that she had never experienced before. While she has traveled previously, for the first time she experienced a great interest to truly learn about the local culture and its history. She knows that this excitement is going to carry over into the classroom, where she hopes to continue taking courses in Human Resource Management and learn of the US’ and Ireland’s role in the global market to further her career endeavors of working for an international company after graduation.

Congratulations again to these inspiring ladies! And a huge shout out to all the others who dedicated their time to give back to their local community and share their love of learning.
