Intensive course for beginners in Spanish. Primary objective: to help students begin early and meaningful communication in Spanish by acquiring necessary basic skills. Emphasizes all four language skills: reading, writing, and especially listening and speaking. Shelters children who have experienced physical and psychological traumas at home. Supports under age homeless orphans who have been vindicated from their parents after a courthouse judgement.

  • Organize leadership events
  • Organize/play games and sports

Women's Shelter

Spanish Proficiency: Advanced
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Shelters women and their children who have suffered physical or/and sexual assault. Provides treatments in which the victims access to feeding, dressing, and medical and psychological support.

Activity Examples:

  • Organize women’s leadership avents
  • Help with the therapy sessions
  • Help children with their homework
  • Help preparing meals
  • Organize/play games and sports

Women's Support: Teenage Girls

Spanish Proficiency: Advanced
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Supports and tutors single mothers and their children until they reach the age of 5. Provides housing, multidisciplinary tutoring and medical support yo the victims.

Activity Examples:

  • Organize women’s leadership avents

  • Take care of the babies
  • Help children with their homework
  • Help preparing meals

STUDENT TEACHING PROGRAMS

Children with Special Needs School

Spanish Proficiency: High Basic – Intermediate
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: March – December

Educates underprivileged students with special needs (Blind students, Down Syndrome, Autism) through alternative methods (speech and physical therapy are part of this program).

Activity Examples:

  • Create and organize Braille Materials
  • Support the teacher to give the lesson
  • Help with the therapy sessions
  • Organize recreational activities
  • Help preparing meals
  • Organize/play games and sports

Elementary School

Spanish Proficiency: High Basic
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: March – December

Educates low income children at a primary level at a community founded and managed schooling program or a public founded primary school.

Activity Examples:

  • Support the teacher to give the lesson
  • Organize recreational activities
  • Help preparing meals
  • Organize/play games and sports

After School Program

Spanish Proficiency: High Basic
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Provides support and mentoring after school hours. Provides nutritious food to low income children after recreational activities.

Activity Examples:

  • Teach hygiene habits to toddlers
  • Organize recreational activities
  • Help preparing meals
  • Organize/play games and sports

HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS

Elderly Shelter

Spanish Proficiency: High Basic
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Provides health services and quality time to homeless seniors.

Activity Examples:

  • Feed the elderly.
  • Organize recreational fun activities.
  • Organize physical activities for the elderly
  • Assist in the kitchen preparing meals.

Children's Cancer Center

Spanish Proficiency: Advanced
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Provides medical attention to underprivileged children with cancer and houses patients during their chemotherapy process.

Activity Examples:

  • Assist doctors and nurses during the chemotherapy.
  • Teach basic primary education while they cannot attend to school.
  • Feed the children.
  • Organize/play games/recreational activities with the patients out of the hospital (through petition)

Provides general medical attention to the public.

Activity Examples:

  • Assist doctors and nurses at the public hospital

Dentistry Program (additional fee)

  • Interact with patients
  • Support the doctor during practice

Midwife and Family Support (additional fee)

Provides medical support to underprivileged mothers during prenatal and postpartum periods. Houses patients during birth period (approximately 2 weeks before and after birth)

Activity Examples:

  • Assist during the child’s birth (Medical related degree required)
  • Keep track of medical records
  • Help preparing meals
  • Help with the cleaning/maintenance

Private Clinic (additional fee)

Spanish Proficiency: Advanced
Minimum Length: 3 weeks

Provides general medical attention to the general public through private practices. (It is also offered seasonally in remote indigenous communities)

Activity Examples:

  • Assist the doctors and nurses at the clinic

Disabled Children Orphanage

Spanish Proficiency: High basic
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Houses orphan children who are mentally and physically disabled. Provides physical therapy to the children (including hydro-therapy)

Activity Examples:

  • Assist with the physical therapies
  • Organize/play games
  • Help preparing meals
  • Feed the patients
  • Help with the cleaning

Private Physical Rehabilitation Center

Spanish Proficiency: Intermediate
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Provides occupational, physical and speech therapy services to children through a private practice.

Activity Examples:

  • Assist with the therapies supporting the doctors.

ART PROGRAMS

Philharmonic School of Music

Spanish Proficiency: Intermediate
Minimum Length: 2 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Allows musicians to learn and practice as part of the philharmonic of the city of Cusco. (Applicant might be able to perform with the orchestra through an audition)

Activity Examples:

  • Practice and learn with the members of the city’s philharmonic
  • Teach music to adult and young students

Theater and Drama Program

Spanish Proficiency: Intermediate
Minimum Length: 3 weeks
Term Availability: All Year

Allows actors/actresses to learn and practice with the members of the city’s program of culture. (Applicant might be able to perform through an audition)

Activity Examples:

  • Practice and learn with the members of the city’s cultural center
  • Teach theater to adult and young students

Soccer Program

Andean Animal Shelter - City

Spanish Proficiency: High Basic

Allows applicant to provide care to rescued Andean animals which can no longer live in the wild. (Located in the city of Cusco)

Activity Examples:

  • Help build specific habitats for each animal
  • Help keep the habitats clean
  • Give care and feed the animals
  • Learn about the unique Andean diversity in Cusco’s region

Allows applicant to provide care to rescued Andean animals which can no longer live in the wild. (Located in the rural areas of Cusco)

  • Rehabilitate animals until being able to be reinserted into the wilderness
  • Help keep the habitats clean
  • Give care and feed the animals

Veterinary Center (Domestic Animals) (additional fee)

Spanish Proficiency: Intermediate

Provides care to domestic animals at a reduced cost, so underprivileged households can take care of their pets too. (This is a non-profit veterinary)

Activity Examples:

  • Support the veterinary in medical procedures
  • Help keep the cages clean
  • Give care and feed the animals
  • Develop a marketing plan (optional)

Canine Shelter - Countryside

Spanish Proficiency: Intermediate
Minimum Length:

Shelters abandoned/mistreated dogs providing them with care and medical treatments. (Located in the rural areas of Cusco)

Activity Examples:

  • Play with the dogs
  • Help cleaning the dog center
  • Train the dogs
  • Support animal control procedures
