Athens: First Glimpse

After the hectic final weeks leading up the trip, and the 13 hour flight connecting through Montreal, I finally arrived in Athens. The very first thing I noticed while on the train into the city was the ubiquitous graffiti. It is absolutely everywhere along the train route, and once you get into the city. I had the pleasure of meeting one of Athen’s few female street artists, who is a part of the all female crew “Biscuits,” during my brief stay in the city, and she was able to show me around and give me some more background on the tone and meaning of many of the pieces we saw. The first thing she explained is that the street art is all about love for the fellow artists and is a very inclusive community. Many of the pieces are dedicated to fellow artists or what she called “crews” (groups of artists who work together, often with a crew name). Some pieces are political, but most are simply fun and colorful; a way for the artists to show off and enjoy themselves. During our walkabout she was able to show me quite a few pieces done by visiting artists, several from Brazil and Belize. Despite the diversity of where the artists come from there is still a great deal of respect for all the serious artists within the community, as I was told at the beginning “It’s all about love.”
