ACADEMICS

ACADEMICS in KOH SAMUI

WHY WE PARTNER WITH HELLENIC STUDIES IN THE ARTS (HISA):

HISA was one of the first schools Athena partnered with when we began, and with good reason. We share the same mission for study abroad – personalized, quality education that starts within the classroom walls and expands into
the world.

HISTORY:

Founded in 2000 in Greece, HISA expanded its offerings to include Thailand in 2015.

EXPERIENCE:

Class sizes are minimized to ensure students receive individual attention, and benefit from a close working relationship with their instructors.

COURSE LISTINGS

Creative Writing Workshop (3 credits)

This is a 45-plus hour intensive workshop designed to encourage writers to discover their own voice by experimenting with persona, voice and character. The course will guide the student’s exploration into the realm of his/her own creative resources. To aid in this process of discovery, students perform spontaneous writing exercises in class and during the field trips and excursions. This intensive intersession component will also examine the relationship between the writer and his/her life landscape. Over the course students will read and discuss the work of writers whose travel in other lands has affected, and in a significant way, created the essence of their poems and prose. How does the nature of our travel to a new place impact our writing? How does the heart respond to its new environment? An ongoing element of the workshop will involve student’s own writing, a search for a new vantage point, adding new windows to our perspective.

Digital Photography Journal (3 credits)

Since the invention of photography nearly two centuries ago and the rise of digital technology, the way human beings receive information, see the world, and see themselves has radically changed. In the 21st century photography has established itself as a formidable tool of expression within the arts. Aimed at encouraging creativity, this course will emphasize a critical sense of visual language in contemporary photography using Thailand, and its environs, as inspiration for new work. We will explore a sense of place through encounters with everything that is Thailand including photographic exhibitions where we will investigate social and historical contexts in photography. Camera techniques, photographic principles, and editing fundamentals with software like Photoshop will be covered. Students will participate in group critiques where they will identify an emerging line of personal inquiry in their work, culminating in a creative series or photo essay for the class.

FAQS

Will I be able to travel independently?

This is an intensive 2 week program, so there will not be much time to travel independently.  You will, however, be traveling with the program to different parts of Thailand during this time, so there isn’t much need for extra travel.

How many students are on the program?

A typical program will have anywhere from 6-20 students.  This makes for an incredibly personal and high-quality study abroad experience, things we at Athena pride ourselves on.

What is the food like?

Delicious!  An adventurous eater will be very happy as there are many opportunities to explore dishes that aren’t readily available in many American restaurants.

Vegetarians: Athena’s resident vegetarian gives Koh Samui Island an 8 out of 10 for being vegetarian friendly!

Do you provide flights?

We have partnered with STA Travel, an incredible student-focused travel agency.  The good people there will be able to help all Athena students arrange flights overseas.

THE CITY

CITY HIGHLIGHTS

What’s Thailand Like?

You will get a taste of two very different versions of Thailand. For the majority of your time, you will be on the island of Koh Samui. Here, you will experience the incredibly scenic island version of Thailand: laid back and easy-going.  For the remaining time, you will get to experience Bangkok. This fast-paced, energetic city will speak to all of your senses. The pace of the city may seem a little chaotic at first, but it goes by a rhythm that makes it unique, and hypnotic to many.

CITY PERKS: Experience the magical landscape of the Gulf of Thailand surrounding Koh Samui … Witness Bangkok’s traditional downtown markets.

WEATHER

  • JANUARY WEATHER: You’ll be content with the weather in Koh Samui during January – the average high is 84 °F and the average low for the month is 75 °F.
  • TROPICAL: Given the tropical climate, there is some rainfall. In January, the average rainfall is around 5 1/2 inches.
