UPSA is a smaller, modern, private institution with approximately 5,000 students in the heart of the city. This school is perfect for Athena students looking for quality individualized instruction. Dr. Jarque was born in Alicante where he lived and studied until he moved to the USA. He has a Ph.D. in Contemporary Humanities and was a Fulbright researcher at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. Dr. Jarque’s welcoming personality and knowledge of Spain make him a truly amazing resource for students.

We figured out a way to make Salamanca better. How? By enhancing your experience with field trips and excursions that are built in to the program! Trips vary each term, but possible trips include:
• Madrid – El Escorial
• Segovia – Avila
• La Alberca – Sierra de Francia
• Aveiro – Porto
With over 10,000 international students in the town throughout the year, this program has both a very young, and a very international population.

Yes! In addition to the field trips/excursions included, you will have time to do independent travel if you choose during your free time. Salamanca is near Madrid, which is a major European hub, so that opens the door to many opportunities.
A typical program will have under 10 study abroad students on the program. This makes for an incredibly personal and high-quality study abroad experience, things we at Athena pride ourselves on. The university you enroll in will have around 6,000 students total.
Great! Salamanca has a lot of tapas restaurants (small portions), as well as meats and cheeses. Many restaurants will serve traditional Spanish plates of meats and sides.
Vegetarians: Athena’s resident vegetarian Salamanca a 6 out of 10 for being vegetarian friendly! You should always be able to find a vegetarian dish, but there is minimal variety.
Yes! You can certainly request who you would like to have as your roommate. This is done after you are accepted into the program; you will note this in your housing request forms.
You will fly into Madrid, Spain, which is a couple of hours from Salamanca. From there, you will travel to Salamanca.
We have partnered with STA Travel, an incredible student-focused travel agency. The good people there will be able to help all Athena students arrange flights overseas.
The Spanish spoken in Salamanca is the purest in Spain, which also makes the city a popular destination for foreigners wishing to learn Spanish.

Imagine a young, vibrant college town in Spain. You actually don’t have to imagine, because that’s exactly what Salamanca is. The town is as charming as it is historic, with one of the world’s oldest universities (1218 AD) centered here. In Salamanca, you’ll have the chance to experience authentic Spanish culture by speaking the language, eating the tapas, and learning to live at the Spanish pace of life. Plaza Mayor is the center of Salamanca, where both locals and visitors gather throughout the day for a meal, a meeting or both.
