Athena Study Abroad - Knowledge Has No Borders

Ask Athena: Which program is best for you?

A lot goes into deciding which study abroad program is best for you. To get the most out your overseas education, you must make certain that the course work is what you desire. But there is an "abroad" part of "study abroad" as well. The "Ask Athena Wizard" has been designed to match you with the Athena programs that best fit your desired experience abroad (based on the questions below).

1. What subjects are you looking to take?
I'm looking for a wide range, from anthropology, to language, to wine tasting
I'm mainly looking to learn a language
I think some art-based courses would work best
Classics like history, philosophy, theology and literature would be nice
An internship is very important
I don't really care

2. Do you like to walk?
Yes, I beg my dog for a walk
Yeah, a stroll around town never hurt anyone
I'd rather not, but will if I have to
No. I only like walking to the fridge
It really doesn't matter to me

3. Do you want to learn a language?
Yes, Si, Oui, Yah, Sim, Ken, Hai, Na'am, Nai, Ja!
Yeah, I owe it to the locals to try my best
It's not important, but I'll learn what I have to
No, Ne, Nu, Votch, Non, O'hi, Nej!
Whatever

4. Are you comfortable learning/using public transit?
Yes - I like subways ... more than Jared
I like a joy ride from time to time
If I have to I will, but these boots are made for walking
Nope, let me off at the next stop
I could care less. Or is it I couldn't care less? Either way, I want it to mean that I don't care for this question

5. Do you prefer a big city or a small town?
The bigger, the better!
I want some bigger city action, but also the calmness of a smaller place
A chill town with something to do is the best
You can't beat a place where everyone knows your name
Big city? Small town? Whatever, let's move on

6. What setting are you most looking for?
I would like to be around American students going through what I am
I am looking for something different, but would like to be eased into it
I want some culture shock, but not an electric shock
Give me something totally different - culture, students, teachers
Give me another question - one I care more about

7. What type of living arrangement would you like?
Who can get homesick in a homestay? I'd like that option
I'm not a typical person, but I'd prefer a typical dorm
Student apartments with a kitchen and common room works best
I'm not saying I'm anti-social, but a single room would be great
I would like a room with a question I care more about

8. What meal situation would you prefer?
Give me structure - I'd like a meal plan and cafeteria
I'd like the option of a weekly meal card
I'd rather learn how to cook like the locals
As long as it doesn't get too expensive, I'd prefer to mostly eat out
I don't have to answer this - you can't make me!

9. What type of structure do you prefer?
I like to speak up, so I'd prefer a structured, interactive, discussion-based classroom
I like an informal, more relaxed classroom setting
I find I learn the best in a more formal, lecture-based classroom
Informal, formal, blah, blah, blah... I don't care to answer this, I want to talk about food

10. What type of food do you prefer?
Fish 'n Chips, Shephards Pie, Burgers = delic ... ious
Pizza, Gelato, Lasagna, Pasta = fantastico
More exotic food like paella, fish, shrimp, or maybe feta cheese and hummus = yums
Do I have to list foods and equate them to a corny term? I just like a wide variety of food from Asian to Italian to American.
Loads of gravy on top of a new question

11. What type of climate do you prefer?
I keep it cool ... so I like it cool
Not that I'm fickle, but I like a range of temperatures
I like it warm, but a breeze never hurt anyone
The hotter the better!
Mostly not caring with a chance of showers

12. What type of immersion are you looking for?
I want to be totally immersed in one culture so much that I might forget how to speak English
I want to be in a totally different world ... but wouldn't complain if a Burger King was nearby
I'm definitely up for a new experiences, but I'll need to speak English to others while I am there
Just going overseas is a pretty big deal for me -- I want to swim in the different culture, but I don't want to drown
I stopped caring at question #2. Make this end.
