As November’s monthly volunteer event, on Friday the 19th Team Athena loaded up the troops and headed to the Columbus - Franklin Discovery Shop. In support of American Cancer Society’s mission to “celebrate more birthdays”, all of the money raised at these upscale resale shops is donated directly to the cause.
Each shop throughout the nation is staffed completely by volunteers with the exception ofone to two paid managers and raises thousands of dollars annually. Almost every volunteer is a cancer survivor themselves or has been touched by knowing someone who has survived.
Each member of the Athena team was given specific tasks throughout the day to help vamp up the shop for the busy holiday season. From helping to organize the supply closet, to pricing and sorting, to finding homes for various items throughout the shop, we were kept busy by???, our wonderful supervisor for the day! As a recent cancer survivor herself, we were privileged enough to hear her story. This inspiring woman continued to volunteer her time at the Discovery Shop even during her treatment (hear her full story from the attached video below)!
Overall, our time spent at the shop was a great opportunity to meet a few incredible people, hear their stories and help support the cause by doing a little shopping ourselves. We did not leave empty handed!
